Project Management Overview

Project management is an integral part of virtually every undertaking, and it is often integral to the success of a project, as well as its smooth and efficient flow.

In order to get to the core of project management, it would be helpful to define what a “project” is. Projects are temporary activities undertaken by a group for the purpose of producing a unique product or service. Projects may also be undertaken in order to produce a particular result.

Projects typically have a defined timetable, with a specific start and end time. Its scope and resources are typically defined by the project goals, the budget, and the timetable.

Most projects are undertaken distinct from a routine, and they typically involve a specific set of tasks intended to accomplish a particular goal. Most participants in a project do not usually work together, and they are often comprised of people who come from different organizations and even different geographical locations.  Most companies will use a visual road map software to help with project management throughout the group.

Projects can take on many forms and may involve different goals. Some examples of projects include building or bridge construction, relief work in the wake of a natural disaster, business expansion, and publicity campaigns.

Apart from the primary goals of a project, there may also be certain objectives related to the task at hand. Most projects will have to be completed according to a strictly defined schedule and budget, and they may have to fulfill certain operational and organizational criteria.

Project management basically involves the utilization of skills, knowledge, and methods with the goal of accomplishing the project effectively. Companies that embark on specific projects typically employ project management as a way to enhance efficiency and to ensure the success of the project, as well as to connect the results of the project with the long-term goals of the organization.

Project management typically involves five specific stages including initiation, planning, execution, monitoring/control, and completion. Each stage of the process involves specific tasks, methods, and procedures, and they may involve different personnel brought in to provide unique skills, services, and capabilities. Each stage of the project may also entail its own budget and time constraints.
